Fall in Central NY & The Southern Tier: Deer Season, Fire Safety, and Your Year-End Game Plan

Hey everyone, Adam Roux here!

Fall in Upstate New York is officially in full swing. The foliage across Syracuse, Liverpool, and Binghamton beginning to peak, Beak & Skiff, Critz Farms and other cider mills are packed, and the temperature is dropping fast.

While October is full of pumpkin carving, football, and cozy weekends, it’s also the month where local risks shift dramatically. From dark, deear-heavy commutes on Route 81 and Route 17 to kicking on the furnace for the first time, autumn brings unique challenges to your home, car, and wallet.

To keep you and your family safe, and avoid expensive surprises, here is your October game plan.

1. Deer Season on CNY Roads: Collision vs. Comprehensive

If you drive anywhere in Central New York or the Southern Tier between dusk and dawn right now, you already know: deer activity is picking up. October and November are by far the most dangerous months for animal collisions on our roads.

Here’s the catch most drivers don’t realize until glass is shattered across the hood: Collision coverage does not cover hitting a deer.a

  • Comprehensive (Other Than Collision): This is the specific coverage that pays if you hit a deer, an animal darts into your path, or a branch falls on your car.

  • The Cost of Skipping It: Skipping comprehensive coverage to save a few dollars a month can leave you on the hook for $4,000 to $8,000+ in front-end body and engine repairs.

It is Often Less Expensive than Collision: You can choose to carry Collision, Comprehensive, Both or Neither on your policy. Often on older model cars we drop both to save some money, but Comprehensive is often much less expensive than collision. Call us today to see how much it would cost to add Comprehensive only to your older model vehicles

The Swerve Dilemma: If you swerve to avoid a deer and strike a guardrail, ditch, or tree, that claim is classified under Collision, which carries a completely separate deductible and may impact your rates differently.

Pro-Tip: If a collision is unavoidable, brake firmly in a straight line, never make an erratic swerve into oncoming traffic or off the road. And take two minutes this week to verify that your vehicle carries comprehensive coverage with a deductible you can comfortably afford.

2. Heating Season Fire Risk & Fire Prevention Week

Early October marks national Fire Prevention Week, perfectly timed with the first week most of us kick on our furnaces, pellet stoves, and space heaters. Heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home structure fires in New York every fall and winter.

Before you dial up the thermostat, run through this quick prep checklist:

  • Detectors: Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Replace batteries and swap out any unit older than 10 years.

  • Chimneys & Flues: If you burn wood, have a professional sweep away creosote buildup before your first fire.

  • Space Heaters: Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from curtains, bedding, or furniture, and plug them directly into wall outlets, never use extension cords or power strips.

What Does a Home Fire Claim Actually Look Like?

A fire claim involves far more than just replacing burned drywall. It includes smoke remediation, water extraction from firefighting efforts, personal property reimbursement, and Loss of Use (Coverage D), which pays for temporary lodging, rentals, and meals while your home is restored.

  • Winterizing Sidebar: While you're prepping the heating system, don't overlook outdoor spigots. Disconnect garden hoses and shut off interior valves to outdoor bibs before the first freeze hits. Frozen, burst pipes and winter ice dams are among the most common preventable winter claims we see each year.

3. Trick-or-Treaters & Halloween Liability

Halloween is one of the most fun nights of the year in our neighborhoods, but having dozens of excited kids rushing up your driveway in masks and costumes creates unexpected premises liability hazards.

A rain-slicked front walkway, a loose step or railing, an unseen extension cord powering lawn animatronics, or a family dog startled by a monster mask can quickly result in an injury.

  • Clear the Runway: Keep your walkways brightly lit, sweep away wet, slippery leaves, and tape down any outdoor wiring.

  • Keep Pets Indoors: Even the friendliest pets can get spooked by masks and loud groups. Keep dogs secure in a quiet back room during peak trick-or-treating hours.

  • The Policy Check: The liability portion of your homeowners or renters insurance protects you if a visitor is injured on your property. However, standard liability limits ($100,000 to $300,000) can be quickly exhausted by modern medical and legal costs. An Umbrella policy provides an extra $1,000,000+ in liability coverage for just a few dollars a month, giving you total peace of mind.

4. Open Enrollment: The Hidden Trap of Work-Provided Life Insurance

October kicks off workplace benefits open enrollment for thousands of employees across CNY. It’s easy to check the box for employer-provided group life insurance and assume your family is fully protected.

Relying solely on work coverage, however, has two major pitfalls:

  • It Doesn't Go With You: If you change jobs, get laid off, or retire, your group coverage usually disappears, or becomes prohibitively expensive to convert. If your health changes in the meantime, qualifying for a new policy later can be tough.

  • It’s Rarely Enough: Most workplace policies offer one to two times your annual salary. If you have a mortgage, auto loans, and children headed toward college, a couple of years of salary barely scratches the surface of what your family would actually need long-term.

  • It Gets REALLY Expensive: The cost can vary between provider, but one thing that is true among them all, the price goes up while you get older. Keep renewing that workplace life insurance and you will slowly and eventually find the Most Expensive option out there (Prices offered to Syracuse employees of a health car insurance company – they work for an insurance company so their benefits must be good right? Wrong. A 35 year old who can secure a very low cost personal policy skips making that move because workplace only costs $0.08/$1000 in coverage. That’s only $40/month for $500,000 in coverage. But those prices go up every 5 years. Small amounts at first. But at age 55, for example, the price becomes $0.411/$1000. That is now $205/month for the same $500,000 in coverage. The unfortunate part is when you get to that age, securing your own policy can be very expensive or not even an option if you’ve developed any medical conditions.

Stop Procrastinating! An individual term life policy is locked in at your current age and health, stays with you no matter who signs your paycheck, and costs far less than most people imagine. Let open enrollment be your reminder buy a real life insurance policy that is your based on your own terms, this year and every year you want it!
